Psychotherapy vs Coaching

Determining whether coaching or psychotherapy is best for you depends on your specific needs and goals. Coaching is typically focused on helping individuals achieve specific goals, such as career advancement or personal development, while psychotherapy is focused on addressing mental health issues and emotional difficulties.

If you are struggling with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or trauma, psychotherapy may be the best option for you. I can provide a safe and supportive space to explore your emotions and work through past traumas.

When I work with you as a psychotherapist, a diagnosis will be required, and paperwork will include a medical CPT code. Some or all of your fee may be reimbursed by your medical insurance.

To achieve specific goals or make changes in your life, coaching may be a better fit. I can provide guidance, support, and accountability to help you achieve your goals and reach your full potential. Coaching often lasts fewer sessions than psychotherapy.

Ultimately, the decision between coaching and psychotherapy depends on your individual needs and goals. I'm happy to consult with you to determine which approach is best for you.

About Me

Since graduating with a degree in social work in 1993, I have worked in a variety of capacities within the behavioral health field for more than 30 years, as a psychotherapist and a clinical social worker. Initially working in the rewarding field of gerontological social work, I later found a passion working with the underserved populations affected by HIV/AIDS, in Los Angeles, and at Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, DC. After 15 years in LGBTQ health, and HIV/AIDS, as clinical director, psychotherapist, and case manager, I began working in private practice.

Insurance (for Psychotherapy Clients)

I do not accept any health insurance. I am considered an "out-of-network" provider, and a percentage of my fee may be covered by your health insurance plan. Contact your insurance company and inquire about "out-of-network" insurance benefits. Some questions to ask:

  • Do I have mental health benefits?
  • What is the reimbursement rate for out-of-network providers?
  • Do I need pre-approval or a referral?
  • How many sessions per calendar year will my plan cover?
  • What is my deductible?

After each session, I will provide you with a statement of service for you to submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. This form will have to include a legitimate mental health diagnosis (DSM-IV) in order to be considered for reimbursement.

Payment

Payment is due at time of service. Payment forms are cash, check, credit card, or Venmo.

Cancellation Policy

When you schedule an appointment, the time is reserved especially for you. If you do not come for your scheduled appointment, or cancel in less than 48 hours, you will be charged the regular session fee.
